PSSSTTTTT Blogging Buddies... Wanna do me a Big OL Favor.... come on.. I'd do it for youuuuu!!! Go visit... This is how we ROLL blog and enter her giveaway.. and when you enter.. tell her that little ole ME sent you...!!! Come on... Let's play...
The pictures you are about to see.. are NOT volcanic pictures, they are not pictures of a bike trail gone bad.. nope.. they're not even pictures of rocks on mountains... This Blog Readers... is my sidewalk that sits in front of my home!! Disgusting isn't it?? When we had that warm stretch and melted a lot of snow.. the town came out and took the massive piles of snow away from the front of our homes.. I was truly thankful for that.. but in the process what once was a BAD sidewalk now is a HORRID sidewalk..

I am taking these pictures and writing a letter to my city! I pay so much in taxes that everytime I drive my car to the front of my house it does NOT deserve to be scratched down the side of it.. three times this has happened...Three times I have been angered.. Three times to many with our taxes!! I know.. I know.. if I complain and they fix it.. then taxes will just go up again.. I'm going to be honest.. I normally don't talk about money.. or the cost of things.. etc.. but I have .014 acres of land... YES.. I'm talking POSTAGE STAMP size... and my taxes a year are almost $3500... I'm sure some of you can beat me.. and some of you are picking your jaws up... remember I'm in NH.. No state tax... well.. if that's what they want to say... Trust me.. you live in the state.. you HAVE TAX!!! And to top all that off.. I believe there are about 145 houses for sale in this city alone... that's quite a bit!! YIKES.. so selling isn't even an option. Do you know how many times I've twisted my ankle walking down off the sidewalk?? Our house sits on a hill.. closer to the bottom so there is a slop involved as well...

Ok.. so now that you ALL have seen my little red headed/freckled picture... I want you to take a look at this picture... Minus the dimple.. and the teeth being a bit bigger... I thought I was looking in a mirror... it was quite strange.. but what do you think.. am I off?? You can be honest... sorry about the crappy photo... battery was dying.. and I was being L-A-Z-Y!!! LOL LOL I would love to see what this little girl looks like in 20 years.. LOL LOL!!

This was sent to me in an e-mail today.. I thought it was a CRACK UP!!! I'll be honest..it sounded a lot like my in-loves... well minus the viagra stuff.. no idea there.. and I ain't going there... But really it's quite funny!!!

Born to be Wild

And what I'm reading
It takes place in the early depression about a family who has lost their home and all their money. They set off from PA to the midwest on foot... I think this will be a good story.. some of it.. well.. it's not realistic.. but then again I read to escape reality so no complaints here.. Ü

You've got to love this hair do!! Here I am the age of 7. I think ALL of my elementary school pictures I look as if my head is crooked!! Thanks to my wonderful grandmother who always took the time to cut our hair using the "straight" method of scotch tape. She would put tape on our bangs and we would have to holds still while she cut across.. and with each little SNIP came a tickle to your nose and lips!! Oh.. she tried... This is a bad picture of a picture I took.. I DO have teeth.. believe it or not.. I didn't lose my first baby tooth until I was about 8. And this red hair.. well.. it lasted til about my teen years.. and it changed color.. go figure!! But anyway.. I LOVED the show BANANA SPLITS!! normally the TV is not on during the day.. but today I watched a friend son and I stumbled upon BOOMERANG!! and this show was on!!! I couldn't believe it... So I thought I would share a small clip with you!!!

Oh I had good intentions of blogging all week.. but each day I found different things to do!! But each day I thought of what I would blog.. and by days end.. I was so tired.. Today I was going to blog first thing this morning.. until house work called... I zipped like nobodies business and then it STRUCK!!! Light a Ball of LIGHT.. a stupid MIGRAINE!!! When I get one of these.. the world stops... seriously stops!! No TV.. no light.. no noise.. and my biggest trigger.. smell!! My stomach gets so upset.. and my face goes numb.. it's such a joy!! I have a new medication to try and as much as I wanted to believe it.. it didn't work.. :(. So I had to crawl up into my bed.. yes CRAWL.. and wake hubby up to pick up our son... After 15 plus years of being with me.. he has got to be the sweetest man EVER!! He always tells me.. to lay down.. no TV.. no Reading.. no nothing.. Ok .. the man has never had a migraine... there is NO NEED to worry about TV and READING... but he is a love.. and just has to be loving.. So it's 10pm at night.. and I can finally handle the computer screen.. I have so much to blog... but... I don't think it will happen all tonight!! and PRAISE GOD for spell check!!

Sooooooooo I have to share what I baked.. I saw this in Martha Stewart Magazine... May 1997 issue.. Actually the same issue as the basement!!

It's called Moist Devil's Food Cake...
I have to tell you.. this batter ROCKED!! Boxed mixes will NOT stand up to this batter.. I could have eaten this uncooked.. ( yeah yeah.. egg thing.. I know..).. It was truly amazing.. but I went ahead and baked them up.
Then I made the frosting.. I'll be honest.. I struggled with this.. I thought I seriously failed on the frosting...So much so that I let it stand overnight.. When I woke up.. I was AMAZED.. my frosting worked..
So.. here is my final product!!

And a piece I sliced.. just so you could see...

My overall thought on this cake... well.. on a scale of 1-10.. 10 being highest.. I give it a 6. I am a sweet kind of girl.. the sweeter the frosting.. the better.. This cake was dense.. but moist.. and the frosting almost made it like a truffle... This cake was some work.. nothing bad that I couldn't handle.. but if you want to whip up something quick.. this is NOT the cake for you!!!

PLEASE KEEP IN MIND.. THIS IS HOMEMADE.. HOMEMADE SWEETS DO NOT LAST AS LONG AS STORE BOUGHT! My best advice.. store this in the fridge.. if you find room.. cause this was a BIG cake..

Moist Devil's Food Cake
Makes three 8-inch layers
Dutch process cocoa mixed with boiling water gives this cake a richer color and stronger chocolate flavor

3/4 cup Dutch-Process cocoa, plus more for dusting ( I like to use King Arthur.. but any store brand is fine)
1/2 cup boiling water
1-1/2 cups ( 3 sticks) unsalted butter, plus more for pans
2-1/4 cups sugar
1 TBSP pure vanilla extract
4 large whole eggs, lightly beaten
3 cups sifted cake flour ( not self rising)
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup milk
Mr.s Milman's Chocolate Frosting
( recipe follows)

1. Heat oven to 350*. Arrange two racks in center of oven. Line bottoms of three 8-by-2 inch buttered cake pans with parchment. Dust bottoms and sides with cocoa; tap out excess. Sift cocoa; whisk with boiling water. Let cool.
2. In electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream butter on low until light and fluffy, and gradually beat in the sugar until light and fluffy, 3 to 4 minutes; scrape down sides twice. Beat in the vanilla.
3. Gradually drizzle the eggs, beating between each addition until batter is no longer slick, scraping down sides twice.
4. Sift flour, baking soda, and salt. Whisk together the cocoa mixture with the milk. With mixer on low speed, alternate adding flour mixture and cocoa mixture, a little of each at a time, starting and ending with the flour. Divide evenly into the three pans. Bake 35-45 minutes, rotating the pans for even baking, if needed, until a cake tester inserted into the center of each comes out clean. Let cool on a wire rack, about 15 minutes. Remove the cakes from the pans, and return to rack to cool, tops up.
5. To assemble, remove papers from bottoms of cakes. Save the prettiest layer for the top. Place one layer on the serving platter; spread with 1-1/2 cups of the chocolate frosting, and repeat with second layer, top with third. Cover outside of cake with remaining 3 cups of frosting.

Mrs. Milman's Chocolate Frosting
Makes 6 cups
Spread icing as soon as it's sufficiently chilled; it keeps its shape well on the cake.

24 ounces semisweet chocolate morsels
4 cups of whipping cream
1 tsp light corn syrup

Place chocolate and cream in a heave saucepan. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly with a rubber spatula, until combined and thickened, 20-25 minutes. Increase heat to medium low, and cook, stirring, 3 minutes more. Remove from heat; stir in corn syrup. Transfer to a large metal bowl; refrigerate. Check every 15-20 minutes; stir until cool enough to spread, about 2 hours. Spread on cooled moist Devil's Food cake.

*** I had trouble with the frosting.. I didn't stir constantly... just stirred very occasionally.. and did fine.. I put it in the fridge.. but it took overnight for this to thicken really well!!! I took it out the next morning.. and let it warm up for about 30 minutes and it frosted the cake beautifully!!
So be patient!!

Side note.. What I read this week..
LOVED IT!!
And what I'm reading NOW...
This book.. I have to tell you is HILARIOUS!!!!! I'm about 4 chapters in and I have chuckled my way through it.. This store "clerk" finds something in the store room that looks like a "mouse catcher" only to find out.. it's a "modern day" breast enhancer... SCANDALOUS for the 1800's I tell you!!! Three of the men's town folks want to order one to catch mice.. the store owner refuses.. hmm wonder why???? LOL LOL

MEAL or NO MEAL

Have fun!! It's addicting!!!

Saturday, January 19, 2008

When I bought my home 7 years ago.. I could not believe my eyes when it came to my basement. Again.. my home was built in 1914... so it's older and most homes had dirt cellars . ( cellars have no windows --basements do). My Basement had a root cellar built in, which was pretty cool but something I just knew I wouldn't use.. It was pretty outdated and did need some work.. and to be honest.. it creeped me out!! LOL LOL.. The best feature of the basement.. it has 12ft ceilings... no crawl spaces that's for sure.. you could put a basketball hoop in my basement!!!

I was flipping through Martha Stewart Magazine from May 1997. I still have most of her magazines and decided to peek for recipes in them until I stumbled upon this article.

THE BASEMENT

Martha writes....
The basement is the most mysterious area of any house. ( ah she ain't kidding.. she's been peeking in my basement windows.. I know it!!) .. Children often imagine bad things happening downstairs, while adults to often tend to fill these subterranean rooms with their darkest household secrets: yellowed magazines, impractical kitchen appliances, furniture waiting to be recaned, and miscellaneous detritus too precious to be thrown away, but so useless it is condemned to eternal basement obscurity.

**GASP GASP**
She knows me so well... My son refuses to go into the basement.. I just never knew ... Ok.. so my 8th grade graduation dress from 1986 is STILL in a box down there... with my heart hoping.. just maybe one day my sweet princess would want to alter it and wear it to her prom some day... ( oohhh pretty in pink flashback there)... but alas.... she DID wear it once... for Halloween... sighhhhhhhh

The article goes on with really some good information... but in total with Martha.. we really know what her final point of view is... CLEAN IT UP and ORGANIZE IT!!!....

My Goal for the year 2008 is to do that....

I am WAYYYYYYYYYYYY to embarrassed to give you the before pictures right now... but please.. please.. do not think the rest of my home is in that disarray.. because it is NOT!! My basement is probably death by unwants, because I have cleaned up the upstairs ..... I can't get rid of that waffle iron from 1924 with the dangerous cords... gosh.. what if it really WORKED and I WANTED to use it someday.. really.. come on.. it STILL has the directions!!!!

Well.. I'm going to make one of the garbage companies in my area RICH this year... YUP!! RICH... Should I hold out for a yard sale.. well.. I LOVE going to them... not having them.. Wait.. that could explain some of my basement issues as well... eh???

Anyway.. You know Martha.. she has a PLAN.. and I have to admit.. this is a classy plan and NOT out of reach.. ( cause let's face it.. some of her ideas are never in my budget... ever!! she is in a dream world sometimes)!!

So.. for your entertainment.. I took pictures of her basement ideas.. and I'm going to share them with you.. especially if you want to jump in and join my efforts into a world of organized basement bliss!!!

This is the picture that caught my eye!!

How I dream to walk down the stairs and grab something that I need with ease...

For us New Englanders.. I love the window storage idea!! We have many windows in our home.. and we have a TON left in our basement from the original structure of the home... and I don't want to get rid of them.. If someone wants to restore this home to it's MINT condition later in years.. I truly want them to have everything available... and I think this is a GREAT way to store that!!

I love love the laundry workspace.. yes.. I'm one of those crazy gals that loves to do laundry... and I think this set up is wonderful.. my washer and dryer now sits in my kitchen .. which I hate... and it would be wonderful to stow it down below.. Laundry shoots are now illegal to build into homes.. but I don't think it would bother me to lug up and down the stairs... I do have teens after all.. * wink wink*

My basement is not as big as this one... but in truth is is large!! I can't complain!! I know that I can make it look so much better.. and functional...

Martha does say..
The vast majority of American basements show serious signs of confusion and neglect. Few people seem to understand the potential that basements offer for work, storage, and even meditative space. A basement can be a truly wonderful place!
Ok.. so I'm up for the challenge.. I WILL take a before picture.. and to start.. I'm going to work in 15 minutes sessions ( it's pretty cold down there now)..

I will keep you posted!!

You know.. it's amazing how many people can touch your life... especially those that you have never met! When I first got the internet and started exploring and "meeting" people I promised myself I wouldn't change for internet.. I was going to be ME... PLAIN and SIMPLE!! So when I read this I was VERY touched!!

**I award this Bloggers with Integrity award for keeping it real to flipflopmom over at just a flipflopmom. she is who she is without apology and can usually put a great spin on her life with grace and humor. love you girlie!

I was awarded this award from Jayedee from Life in the Lost World
You know.. ever since I met her.. I myself always though of her as a "keeping it real" kind of gal... She is a beautiful Christian woman.. but understand the real world we live in.. She is a "keeping it real Christian"!!! She can laugh at things without being offended.. understand where her kids and the world is coming from... and hands it over to God... She is a true woman of honor.. and an outstanding mom... Go peek at her blog and see JUST how many kiddos she does have!!!! You will be surprised!!! And as an added bonus... they are all GORGEOUS!!!!

So... I have been asked to pay it forward.... This is going to be soooooooooooooo hard!! Sooooooooo hard.... I would give it back to her.. in a heartbeat... BUT... I can't... sooooooo here are my 5... I would give it to EVERYONE I blog with... cause I think you all ROCK!!

I'm gonna try again".. and her daughter has been the sweetest friend to my son!!

3) Is my newer blogger friend TAM from MommaSong
She states in her profile she's "just" another stay at home mom... little does she realize.. she's more than just the "just"... She is full of life and character and has a POSITIVE outlook on everything she writes!! I love her photos and what she shares.. Thanks for being my new blogger friend!!!

4) ahhh this blogger is amazing in many ways.. Lara from Overstuffed
She has three amazingly BEAUTIFUL daughters that bring life to the blogging world.. I read her posts some day and Laugh out Loud... and some days want to cry because I miss the moments that she is getting to now... It's not easy watching your ONE daughter grow into a woman and start peeking at colleges.. sniff sniff... however.. I can head on over to her blog anyday and see what her girls are up to.. or what they're saying.. the latest post.. one of her daughters ask "Mom is Jesus your brother".... LOVE her answer!!! Her photography is so amazing as well!!!

5) But not least... Gosh.. I want this list to grow.. and grow.. and grow... but.. for my 5th and final blogger I give to Donna from Blessings of Love

She is ALWAYS encouraging!! Always!! and I'm still waiting for her visit to NH.. where she is ALWAYS welcome!! Then all us NH bloggers will HAVE To get together!! I went to the post office the other day to mail out my "Blog Prize" to Erin and I saw these stamps... They caught my eye and I thought they were the cutest stamps I had seen in a LONG LONG TIME!!!

and this!!!....

And last but not least... this one...

I remember being small.. and always.. always waiting for Sunday nights when "THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF DISNEY" came on... I loved watching The apple dumpling gang, or That Darn Cat, or Escape to Witch Mountain and if we were ever so lucky.. possibly a showing of Cinderella.... I was captivated... I loved all the creation and talent of things I never thought I would see or touch in my life time. However; I finally did it.. in 2004 we went to Disney World.. We had friends that moved to FL and worked there! Not only did we get into ALL the parks for FREE.. my hubby's uncle gave us FREE TICKETS to fly down and back!!! To me.. I was in awe!!! I would FINALLY touch Cinderella's castle.. after many many Sunday's of watching Tinker belle fly over it... I no longer had to be jealous. Ü
I know that some can't or don't see the "aweeee" in Disney.. and that's ok.. I had a CRAPPY CRAPPY childhood... and seriously don't remember to much of it... but I remember the "ESCAPE" on Sunday nights into a world of mystery.. and fantasy....( and I still hear the snide remarks of my mother.. "Why can't any of you be talented and make me millions like these kids"... yeah.. money was her life... )

However... my kiddos are going again this FEB... I hope they have the time of their lives. They will get to hug Mickey again.. and meet up with my dear friend in FL... I'll still be home in the cold.. brrrrrr.... Oh well... I was going to CRASH their fun and fly to FL too... but I figured... they are truly old enough for me to let go.. a little... Gosh.. My daughter will be in College in a year!!! I don't WANT to let go... Time flies sooooooooooo fast!!!

Oh.. I made the yummies supper last night.. super quick.. super easy!!! Hubby loves seafood/chicken Fettuccine Alfredo from a restaurant here in town... I seriously don't enjoy this restaurant.. I think the atmosphere is stuffy... so I said.. Why don't I make you your own.. He was game...

So here's what I did...
I went and bought scallops and shrimp.. ( Lobster was WAY out of the question cause of price).
Cooked those all in butter with garlic ( yes I'm a bit Paula Deen here and I used a WHOLE stick of butter)
Meanwhile...
I was boiling two boxes of Fettuccine
Cut three chicken breasts in half to thin them out and grilled them on the grill.
I boiled a bag of broccoli in the process...

Once everything was cooked... I chopped up the broccoli into smaller pieces.. chopped the chicken up and added them to the drained noodles... then I added THREE jars of already made Alfredo sauce ( I have no problem making my own sauce.. this was just in my cupboard ---I was shopping at home first)... mixed that up well and heated it up.... VOILA!! My portion was ready...
After I scooped out the already made dinner I then added the scallops and shrimp with butter to my hubbies.. and a little for my son... Let's just say.. EVERYONE was STUFFED!!! and it was yummy... I think that was a QUICK 30 minute meal.. hands down.. Ü
Here's a picture of my portion...

And here is what I'm reading...

Someone asked for reviews of the books that I have read... I have no problem doing that!! I'll leave a couple review for tomorrow!!!

Wish Lists

I have been tagged by Melissa.

1.Write two lists of 5 items each...one material list and one spiritual list.
2. Tag 5 people to complete this as well. Go to their blogs and let them know you tagged them.

Why is it that it's WAYYYYYYYY easier to give the material list than the spiritual list???

Ok.. Here it goes...

SPIRITUAL
1. I would love to find a church family. I spent 10 years in my last church and in the end it never really felt like a family. Now when I see people from my past church they actually ignore me. ( just happened the day we went to the library!!)

2. I would love to engage in true friendships. Don't get me wrong.. I love the friends I have.. however... most of the friends I have will make plans and then cancel at the last minute... I guess that's why I shy away from getting close to others. I guess in truth I should never put "expectations" on any of them.

3. Devotions.. I truly slack in devotions.. I need to make more time for them and less time for other things.

4. I would like to use the gifts that God gave me without feeling that I'll fail at every attempt and give up.

5. I wish I could carry a tune.. because I would always sing unto the Lord... I guess I do now.. but I don't want to bust anyone Else's eardrums in the process... Ü

MATERIAL
1. Well if anyone knows me.. they would know that I would LOVE LOVE LOVE a new NIKON Digital Camera.... I have been saving for it.. but.. it's a long save.. Ü

2. I wish that I never had to worry about oil.. I seriously stress almost to tears over the cost of it. It should not cost anyone $600. PLUS ever month and a half to heat their home. It's due to pure greed and it saddens me and makes me hurt for those that have to choose between eating or being warm.

3. I would love to redesign my kitchen. I would really love state of the art kitchen appliances... however.. I would love them fashioned to look like they were 100 years old.

4. A library in my house with never a loss for a book to read!

5. A boat for my husband.

I'm not very good at choosing just 5 people... so I say.. if you want to grab this.. then feel free... if not .. that's ok too.. however if you do ..do it.. come and let me know.. I'd love to read and comment!!

What I'm reading...

I have been a bad.. bad.. blogger lately... and for that I'm truly sorry... It seems like I'm on the go.. lately with no time to spare. However, tonight I have kicked my kids of the computer so I can sit here and blog!!

I don't know about you all.. but here in New England our weather changes day by day. Yesterday while out doing some property inspections for a half an hour.. I got SUN, RAIN, DRIZZLES, FOG and more SUN. It was the strangest thing. As soon as I got home I took a few pictures. This one is to show you how "steamy" everything was around my home.

As I went to the back of my house.. on my left I saw this...

To my right.. I saw this...

That's a pretty big difference in the sky. Within two minutes of going inside the heaven's gates opened and it started pouring.. yet again! I tell you.. we have the strangest weather.. I'm not complaining for the warmth we've had though. It's helped out with the heating bills a bit!!

Well... right after Christmas I didn't hit those "BIG" clearance items. I just stood back and decided I didn't need anything else. I had pretty much cleaned out YEARS worth of Clearance Items this year.. and I didn't want to stock pile again.... HOWEVER.. I was cruising down the isle of Wal*Mart when my eye spotted and sign that said.. .40 cents... hmmm what in the world is .40cents in the food isle.. I looked down and I found THESE!!!....

I checked the expiration date.. and the shelf life is til 2009!! I snagged 12 bags and have put them away to save for Valentines day, St. Patty's day.. and who knows.. maybe even Christmas next year if they last that long... but I couldn't help buying these for that price... I love to bake.. so why not???

As a side note.. just wanted to give you a quick update.. my son got a 95% on his project we so frustratingly worked on at our local library!!! God is good I tell you.. LOL LOL.. and I found out that our library has this groovy feature.. From my computer at home.. I can log into their site.. look up a book and if I want to reserve it .. I can! From my own chair.. I ask myself.. WHAT TOOK ME SO LONG TO FIGURE THAT OUT??? I'm sure it's not new!! LOL LOL...
Here is the book I'm reading now!!!

I have a passion...Its a passion that is free and can take me any place I want to go and meet anyone I want to meet!! I read...!! I read all the time.. every single second I get a chance I dive into a book and go on Mini Vacations, visit the wild west from a hundred years ago, or visit the modern life in Chicago. Naturally, because I love to read I love to visit my library.

As much as I would love to, I can't buy every book that I read .. I would go BROKE!! On my normal visits I usually walk around and touch about 35,000... just because I can... but today.. my trip consisted of having to use the computers... the public computers because my printer decided to DIE on me. My son has a book report due on Friday and we needed to print off pictures and facts to make a mobile ( remember making those with the coat hangers!!).
I place my son at one of the 5 computers they have and told him to sit there for a second. I asked the librarian how to access the computer.. he kindly tells me... BUT.. before I could walk back over to the computer that my son *HAD* been sitting at.. two teens come from no where and kick him off... GRRRR.. so NOW I'm on an 11 minute waiting list ( it could be up to an hour).. so 11 minutes isn't bad.. but I was still steaming because of these two teens....

They leave within 5 minutes.. which is cool... So we walk over .. log in.. and VOILA we have access.. super cool!! We don't get but 15 minutes into this project and these two teens are back.. and they are TICKED because we are on the computer that they were using ( and had logged off from)... So they decided to take my jacket and my sons school work and shove it to the opposite side of the table... I have money and cards in my jacket so I have to go and grab them.. and I said to them.. "Didn't anyone show you manners?" Of course no answer...

Well, I guess to get "back at me".. they decided to make their phone ring.. text message.. you name it they did it with it... I again told them they were SEVER LY RUDE!!! We are seriously trying to work hard on this project and the distraction is OBNOXIOUS!!! Then ever 35 seconds they kept asking the girl next to me how much time she had left ( we have an hour tops if there is a waiting list)... So on top of jabber jawing, phone playing, and yelling about how much time someone had.. I was ready to BLOW a GASKET!!! I could NOT believe how RUDE these kids were.. and seriously not caring how RUDE they were...

There was one librarian upstairs and he was busy.. so he couldn't do much.. but I had a funny feeling he KNEW I was aggravated when I paid for my paper that I used.

Why or Why do parents and adults think this behavior is funny and acceptable?? Out of the 5 computers my City has ONE and Only ONE of them were being used for school work. Now don't get me wrong.. I believe that everyone should do what they want on a computer.. but when you do have 2 or 3 kids that NEED to get school work done.. it was annoying!! I think they should split them up actually... some for fun and some for work.....

As for the teens.. grrr... I don't understand the obsession with Cell Phones.. I don't understand the NEED to be rude with them.. and honestly honey.. I don't really want to hear about the boil you have on your backside.. take that conversation to mama!!! sighhhh!!!

Good news.. the report is almost done!!! WOO HOO!!!
